P.X. Farms Case Study: Cutting Waste Costs by £10,000 a Year

Project Overview

James Peck runs P.X. Farms Ltd, a family run farm based in Dry Drayton, Cambridgeshire. Covering around 12,000 acres, the business combines traditional farming with modern technology and more sustainable ways of working.

Before getting a baler, the farm was spending around £15,000 a year on skip collections. That was a big ongoing cost, with the waste simply being taken away.

Mardon supplied a RamPack Semi-Automatic Baler to help them deal with the waste they were producing on the farm and make better use of the material they already had on site.

The Challenge

Running a 12,000 acre farming operation comes with a lot of waste to deal with, from packaging and feed bags to plastic film.

At P.X. Farms, the challenge was how to deal with that waste without the cost of constantly relying on skips.

  • £15,000 a year spent on skip collections
  • Large volumes of waste generated across the farm
  • An ongoing cost with no return from the waste being collected

With the cost adding up year after year, it was time to look at a different way of managing the waste.

The Solution

Mardon supplied P.X. Farms with a RamPack Semi-Automatic Baler, chosen to suit the amount and type of waste produced across the farm.

Rather than buying the machine outright, P.X. Farms chose to finance the baler. The idea was simple: reduce the cost of skip collections while also generating rebate income from the baled material, helping to cover the monthly repayments.

The Results

The change has made a noticeable difference to the way P.X. Farms deals with its waste:

  • Skip collection costs reduced from £15,000 a year to under £5,000
  • £10,000 annual saving on skip collections
  • Rebate income from the baled material now covers the finance repayments on the machine
  • What was previously a cost is now, in effect, paying for itself

James talks through the changes himself, including the space saved, the reduction in waste and the financial benefits of having the baler on site.

If you’re a farmer looking at ways to reduce the cost of dealing with waste, it’s well worth a watch: Hear it straight from James himself.

How Mardon Can Help

The right machine depends on your farm’s size, waste volumes and materials. The RamPack range covers all of it, from compact, straightforward models like the RamPack 75, well suited to smaller farms or sites where space is tight, and easy to use for cardboard, paper and plastic film, through to larger machines for bigger operations.

With over 20 years’ experience in recycling machinery, we’ve seen a lot of farm setups, and we take the time to understand yours, your waste volumes, materials, space and budget, before recommending anything. As both Wrights Agriculture and James Peck at P.X. Farms have shown, the results speak for themselves.

Whether you’re starting from scratch, replacing an existing machine, or weighing up rental versus purchase, we’ll walk you through the options and the numbers.
