What is Simpler Recycling?
The law is changing for all businesses and non-domestic properties in the UK.
The new legislation “Simpler Recycling” is coming into effect on 31st March 2025 and will affect all businesses and non-domestic properties with 10 or more full time employees (or equivalent).
The new law requires all waste to be split into:
It aims to increase recycling by;
- Standardising and simplifying what can be collected for recycling, so people will be able to recycle the same waste whether at work or at home.
- Removing recyclable material from general waste and being sent to landfill
What does this mean for your business?
The biggest impact businesses will face will be separating all recyclable material from general waste. People will no longer be able to dispose of any type of dry recyclables or food waste into mixed general waste.
You need to Paper and Cardboard from other dry recyclables (plastic, metal and glass), unless your waste collector collects them together. Waste collectors may also choose to collect other dry recyclable materials separately, like glass. You should discuss how your dry recyclable waste will be collected with your chosen waste collector.

There is no minimum weight imposed for food waste, meaning all food waste must be separated and cannot be added to general waste.
Sites that produce a significant amount of food waste will benefit from reducing the volume the food waste takes up. This can be achieved using a bin press, bag press or a portable compactor.
